Medusa and the Snail
By Lewis Thomas

Lewis Thomas says mistakes lead to discovery. Although making a mistake is fine getting it right the first time is even better. If you make a mistake on a HUGE test you don’t learn anything. By discovering something that is a mistake it is pure luck. I don’t think making mistakes can lead to amazing discoveries.

I think Lewis Thomas is WRONG. Failure might help you but success will help you even more. If you do nothing but fail you will never learn or make anything happen. Therefore Lewis Thomas is wrong, with success comes discovery and learning.

My brother doesn’t learn from mistakes and failure. He does the same stupid stuff every day. He got caught stealing some valuables from a boy’s backpack. Even after he got caught he still steals items and vandalizes property. Now he is doing slightly better but I know he will go back to doing the things he did.

In Romeo and Juliet Capulet and Montague set aside their differences. But they did it through their children’s deaths. By not paying attention to them they were able to do everything that they did. If Capulet and Montague knew that their children loved each other both of them would still be alive. Through failure were Capulet and Montague were able to put their past behind them.

So Lewis Thomas is wrong failure will lead to more failure. And finding something through success is better than finding it through failure. Lewis Thomas might have thought failure was good but to other people would get it right the first time.

Cheating

If you cheat to win you are not being fair to the other students. Cheating should never be a option to win if you want to pass you have to practice and work hard to succeed. If you cheat on something and win that is not a victory you stole it from someone who tried honestly to get a good grade. And if someone you know is cheating you just have to try your best and you can beat him. Cheating should never come to mind if you want to win.

Now cheating in school is more of less serious than cheating is sports. The school board should gave the teacher fail them so they learn. Choosing to cheat on a test just because you didn’t study is very disappointing and if you get caught you will face the consequences. If you go to school and all you do is cheat you will go through school not learning anything.

Cheating in college is a different level of cheating that high school or middle school. Cheating in college is way more serious than HS or MS because if you get caught you will be dropped. So cheating in college requires more secrecy and you have to watch your back. Of course you can always do the work but if you are a cheater that thought will never appear in your mind.

One time I got caught cheating and I was very disappointed with myself. It was in middle school and I didn’t study for a test so I was nervous them I remembered I had the test paper in my backpack. Every minute I would look at the paper and write down what I needed but I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. When I was halfway done my teacher took the paper from me and gave me a F them I got detention. But my teacher was nice and let me do the test again I studied for it and I got a C.

The bottom line is that you should never cheat. And if you do cheat you have to be prepared to face the consequences. The teacher that resigned was correct not wrong the school board was wrong. The students should receive the strictest punishment for what they did on the test, they know that cheating is wrong and they did it anyway.

Flight 93

In the movie Flight 93 a group of people stop terrorists from crashing into the White House or the Capital building. Can a small group of people really change the world?. For better or worse they can try and achieve. Margaret Meade says you can for both sides of the spectrum but we will see if that is true.

Lets look at how it can be a good thing. The passengers in Flight 93 changed the outcome of the airliner by taking control of it. By working together they valiantly stepped up to the terrorists and said OH NO YOU DIDN’T. Taking control of the plane meant that they saved the White House or Capital Building from being destroyed. Sadly though they all died but their death saved thousands more.

Now the bad side to this story. The terrorists wanted to send a message to us and they succeeded, it was loud and clear. Two of the four planes went and crashed into the WTC killing 3,000 innocent citizens and threatening millions more, leaving them to ponder why it happened. The terrorists left New York in shambles destroying their hard work. And with their resources and with Osama Bin Laden leading them it was almost inevitable.

In the book TKAM Atticus Finch risks his life to save Tom Robinson. When a Lynch mob appears to take Tom, Atticus stands his ground for what is right. Then Scout and Jem come to their father’s aid to defend Tom Robinson. During this another mob comes to assist Atticus and his children to defend Tom. When the mob who wants Tom leaves everyone was happy and proud of Atticus for what he did.

Is Margaret Meade right on how it ‘’ only takes a small group to change the world?’’. I personally think that she is right but with being right she said that both good and bad are right. With the passengers from flight 93 and the terrorists who succeeded. But they don’t come close to how a small group of Nazis came to power and killed 6 million Jews and other people in the Holocaust.
